How Urban Growth in the Global South Affects Agricultural Dynamics and Food Systems Outcomes in Rural Areas: A Review and Research Agenda

The urbanisation in the Global South provides opportunities for improved rural livelihoods vicinity of cities, but these do not automatically occur. literature shows that urban expansion leads to more intensive land use around cities and a shift production towards high-value products. However, competition growing can lead increasing socioeconomic vulnerability affected areas, particularly those who have no or weak ownership tenancy rights. Urban also negative ecological consequences such as extinction wetlands deforestation. In current literature, there are very few studies be found comprehensively simultaneously analyse effects on food security, equity, impacts systems areas. To better map understand growth agricultural dynamics, livelihoods, environment, three-track research agenda is proposed: comparative field farmers’ decision-making processes under increased factors due sprawl; role urban–rural connectivity, city size, patterns dynamics city; environmental sprawl development cities.
